Affordable Acupuncture - Charge Less, Earn More?

John Weeks’ The Integrator Blog featured an interesting article on Working Class Acupuncture, a Portland, Oregon clinic built on the concept of making acupuncture more affordable.

As Lisa Rohleder, LAc, began trying to make sense of the business of professional acupuncture, she witnessed two distinct phenomena. First, she observed that a huge percentage of the working poor and even the middle class of people in the United States cannot afford to pay for acupuncture treatment when individual appointments cost $65-$200. Second, Rohleder observed that over 50% of graduates of acupuncture schools abandon practice without ever figuring out how to make a living at it.

Discovering where your referrals come from is the single best way to get more of them. You can use my “five P’s” or something of your own, but make sure you track them from day one. Before you know it, it’s going to be day one of year two and having referral source data is going to be incredibly helpful in figuring out how to spend your marketing dollars.

Research Careers for CAM Professionals

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) has created a career development award for selected CAM clinicians who wish to pursue a career in research. NCCAM is a division of the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Award recipients get up to five years of intensive research training to help launch a career in research. What makes this opportunity realistic is that it provides up to $75,000 in annual salary for participants. Most early-career CAM professionals are so cash strapped that they can’t afford to spend any more time in school - the NCCAM award could easily change that.

Naturopathic and Massage Therapy Professions Grow

The Integrator Blog references two recent surveys that point to significant increases in the number of licensed naturopaths and in consumer use of masssage therapy.

I’d be interested to see stats on the growth of naturopathic usage. This study shows the number of licensed ND’s nearly doubling - comparing that against consumer use would be revealing. If anyone has recent data, let me know.
